March 2024: Palaeohome Fieldwork
As part of our objectives, a team of scientists visited important Palaeolithic sites in northern Tamil Nadu comprising archaeologists, geochronologists, geomorphologists, paleobotanist and experts in satellite remote sensing and geospatial studies. Ongoing research led by the Sharma Centre for Heritage Education, India resulted in the establishment of Early Pleistocene Acheulian occupation similar to sites noted in parts of Africa with implications for hominin dispersals. The sites of Attirampakkam, Sendrayanpalayam and others in the vicinity were visited to discuss interpretations of Quaternary geomorphology, geochronology and archaeology. The field trip led to further exploration of sections, and documentation of stratigraphic sequence of Acheulian assemblages and led to the discovery of new site contexts in the Allikuzhi hill ranges. This was followed by a discussion meeting held at the French Institute of Pondicherry, where online participants joined the meeting. This led to the establishment of a planned strategy and time line for multi-disciplinary collaborative work culminating in a series of publications on the Quaternary palaeoenvironments of the study region in northern Tamil Nadu, southeast India. Subsequent fieldwork as a follow-up of this initial meeting led to the documentation of samples suitable for palaeomagnetic measurements.
